The themes of these three mugs - Don’t Hug Me. I’m Scared. (aka DHMIS, a horror youtube channel), Beetlejuice, and Coraline- all hold a special place in my heart. I’ve watched DHMIS over and over for about a year and a half, and some days it’s practically all I can think about. I love watching it again and again because each time I see something that I hadn't noticed before. Over the summer I went to see Beetlejuice at the Marquis theater, and I’ll say that was one of the best days of my life. Not only was the acting immaculate, but the work on the lighting and props made everything come to life. Lastly, Coraline brings me back to when I was a kid. Every time I went to my neighbors house, we would watch it over and over and over. I’ve watched it at least 20 times. These three mugs were each crafted in the same way. First, I took a bottle of glaze and wrapped it in newspaper as my mold. Then, I rolled out a slab of clay to wrap around and make the sides. I did the same for the bottom of the mug, rolling out slabs and scoring and slipping them on. Finally, I made each little piece to be sculpted, put them onto their mug, and put them up to be fired. The small sculptures, however, were not as easy to make as it sounds. I had to make tiny pieces of clay into a very specific shape, and then carve details onto them. For each mug, the sculpture process itself took about 2-3 class days. Once the mugs came out of the kiln, I dipped each in white glaze and carefully painted them with their respective colors from the shows. The glaze work may look a little sloppy, but that’s how I intended it to be. I wanted each one to feel childlike to the viewer, because that's how each show represents itself. My one thing I want people to take away from this is: if you love it, be loud about it.
